Farmers Market V (originally posted on 9/16/08)

- What I bought:
- Red leaf lettuce
- Spicy jalapeno chevre and feta from Tourmaline Hill Farm
- Micro-greens from Thirty Acre Farm
- An heirloom tomato (not sure what kind), and an orange tomato
- Purple peppers
- A cucumber
- Carrots
- Green beans
- What I did with it:
- I made (I must say) one of the best salads in the world with the simplest and freshest ingredients - the red leaf lettuce, the orange tomato, purple peppers, cucumber, carrots, and feta. If you've never tried champagne vinegar before, check it out. Its more expensive than cider vinegar, but not outrageously so. Its worth it. It was perfect on this salad.
- One of my favorite ways to eat green beans is in a stir-fry with beef and a peanut sauce. Instead of rice, I served this over, and next to, the micro-greens that I picked up from Thirty Acre Farm. I'll say the same thing that I said about the champagne vinegar - if you've never tried micro-greens before, you're in for a treat. Micro-greens are sprouted from seeds of many kinds. Bigger than sprouts - think of baby baby-greens. They have a nice crunchy texture, and they are very versatile (using them as a bed on which to serve a stir-fry is pretty atypical). They may seem a little pricey when you look at that "per pound" price, but they are very light - I paid about $7 for a big bag that had enough for 4 servings. That isn't a lot to pay for an interestingly delicious, nutritous and different salad. (And because they're from Thirty Acre Farm, they're certified organic! Check their site out at www.thirtyacrefarm.com.) See first photo below.
- I had special plans for the jalapeno chevre. I shredded two potatoes, mixed them with some olive oil, salt and pepper, and sauteed them in a hot non-stick pan. After allowing the bottom to get golden and a little crispy, I spread some of the jalapeno chevre over the frittata and folded it in half. The savory potato mixed with the spicy creaminess of the chevre was a perfect combination for brunch. See second photo below.
One more week, and another bounty of nutritious and delicious meals.
