Farmers Market VIII (originally posted on 10/18/08)

- What I bought:
- Red-leaf lettuce
- Buttercup squash
- Honey from Tom's Honey & More
- Fire Roasted Sweet Red Pepper & Garlic Chevre from Tourmaline Hill Farm
- Feta from Tourmaline Hill Farm
- Baby turnip
- Red carrots
- Parsnips
- Cortland apples
- I just got back from Greece a few weeks ago, and I have been buying Tourmaline Hill Farm's feta every week. Its delicious, firm, and just salty enough without being too salty. I consider myself a regular customer. I made an interesting salad with the greens, apples, baby turnip, feta and honey. I sliced the turnip and apples over the greens, crumbled the feta on top, and drizzled a little honey and cider vinegar over the salad. The earthiness of the turnip partnered well with the savory feta and sweetness of the apples and honey. The cider vinegar kind of brought it all together. (I ate the rest of the turnip like my grandmother taught me - raw, with a little salt sprinkled on the next bite. This snack always brings me back to her garden in the early 70's when I learned that from her.)
- Red carrots are delicious eaten raw. I washed them, trimmed the ends and side roots, sliced them and put them in water in the fridge. They kept very well. If you've never had red carrots before, try them. Their flavor isn't fundamentally different from their orange siblings, but there is a gentle spiciness to it. It registers on my palate as kind of piney. Very interesting and very delicious. Red carrots make great salads, slaw, and sandwich stuffers. .
- I didn't have much time for cooking, and I wanted a nice homemade meal to "cook once and eat 3 or 4 times" so I threw a pot roast in the oven. An hour before it was done I threw in some potatoes, sweet potatoes, and the parsnips. Yum!
- On Sunday morning I made scrambled eggs and mixed in a little of the red pepper and garlic chevre. Served with garlic bagels and hot coffee - what a great way to start a Sunday.
What I did with it:
This weekend I had very little time for cooking, so this list is short and simple:
One more week, and another bounty of nutritious and delicious meals.
